How Entries Are Evaluated
Judging Criteria
Each submission is scored independently on a 1–10 scale across six dimensions. The total score (max 60) determines the final ranking.
Scientific Value
1–10Does the image convey meaningful scientific information? Is the biological content clear and informative?
Technical Quality
1–10Is the image technically well-executed? Consider resolution, signal-to-noise, focus, and absence of artifacts.
Composition
1–10Is the framing effective? Does the arrangement of elements guide the viewer's attention?
Originality
1–10Does the entry show a creative or novel approach to imaging, specimen preparation, or presentation?
Visual Impact
1–10Is the image visually striking? Would it stand out in a publication or presentation?
Caption & Context
1–10Does the caption clearly explain what is shown, the imaging method, and the scientific significance?
Scoring Summary
Judges score each criterion from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest). The six scores are summed for a total out of 60. Final placements are determined by averaging total scores across all judges.
